The varsity members of the Viking Crew competed in the 2007 Row for the Cure, benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation and hosted by Station L Rowing Club. They finished first (of 2) in the Mixed Open/Collegiate 8+ division, completing the 5k course on the Willamette with a time of 19:36.

Head of the Lake - Lake Union, Seattle, Wa.
Sunday, November 12, 2006

The Viking Crew Team met at our boathouse early Saturday morning, de-rigged and loaded the boats onto the trailer, and embarked on our voyage to the great city of Seattle. At Lake Union, we rigged our boats alongside our boathouse-mates, University of Portland Crew, and amidst of a swarm of hundreds of other boats and perhaps thousands of other rowers, coxswains, and coaches

We roamed the city, browsed the Pike Place Market, and tasted the fruits that Seattle had to offer (not the least of which were baked goods, fine cheeses, and coffee from the original Starbucks). We got rained on. We did a little carb-loading at the good ol' Spaghetti Factory. We anxiously discussed the forecasts of inclement weather. We then settled in for the night at Hazel Wolf High School. (Thanks so much, Hazel Wolf!)

In the morning, we packed up, ate breakfast, and headed back down to the lake front. The races were already delayed due to weather, but excitement was still in the air. (The free gingerbead latte samples didn't hurt the atmosphere.) We ran our metaphorical fine toothed combs over our boats, and awaited the command to launch. We were ready to give our all for this season finale.

Alas, the races were ultimately called off entirely due to weather. But we still had fun together as a team, enjoyed Seattle (and its many coffees), and had a safe ride back home.

Portland Invite Regatta - Portland Boathouse, Portland, Or.

This weekend's regatta was our most successful of the season so far. Our Men took 1st place in both the Varsity 8 and Novice 4 events. And though our Women didn't place, our Novice Women beat two boats, and our Varsity Women cut the difference between their and UP's time by more than half compared to last weekend's scrimmage.
